Vermont homeschool & equivalency guide
General information, not legal advice. Check your state’s current rules. Requirements depend on the legal route you choose; age alone does not establish exam eligibility.
Homeschool notice & assessment
Notice and reporting
Send initial enrollment notice at least 10 business days before commencing home study. For subsequent years, send annual notice at least 10 business days before the intended start.
Assessment and submission
Complete an annual assessment and retain it; it is no longer routinely submitted to the agency under the 2023 changes.
Based on Appendix A, p. 348, with official-source corrections where needed.
Education agency & contacts
Vermont Agency of Education
Appendix B, p. 354. Homeschool oversight and adult education may be handled by different agencies.
High school equivalency
Exams: GED
16 minimum; candidates under 18 need signed parent/guardian consent.
Appendix C, p. 359, with official-source corrections where needed. Residency, withdrawal, identification, consent, and online versus test-center rules may also apply.
Source review
The printed appendices report a review date of October 20, 2026. Website source check: 2026-11-01.
Official statute independently confirms notice at least 10 business days before starting, annual notice, and end-of-year assessment retained by parents rather than routinely submitted. GED minimum 16 and written parental consent below 18 match. Appendix language should specify initial versus subsequent annual notice.
